Corfu - Mr Alexis' Creamery - unchanged after 66 years

Famed for its fresh galaktompoureko, yet in Mr Alexis' small shop, one finds mountains of super fresh local butter, sold by the kilo and served with honey, authentic yoghurt with a taste from the old days, ryzogalo (rice pudding) and sweet creams - all made by him.

Foreign tourists,  attacted to the obviously old small shop, Greeks who have "done their homework", who come to see whether this is indeed the place with "the best galaktomboureko in Corfu", and locals, for whom the Creamery is a part of their daily lives for over 60 years.

It first opened in 1950, on Agiou Vassileiou Street, by Mr Alexis himself. To this day, many things have changed in the "Pinia" area, yet this little shop retains many elements of the atmosphere of that time. the centuries-old road with the fishmongers has gradually been transformed into a daily meeting point for the locals, as, next to the fishmongers, there began to appear sock shops, clothes shops and small shops selling underwear, which changed the makeup of the neighbourhood.

There, at one end of the kantouni (small street) that begins on Vrachlioti Square (pictured above), the small cobbled square, with its Venetian-style cistern, which today lies at the heart of the tourist city centre, this small creamery popped up 64 years ago. A shop which not only gave a sweet taste to generations, with its creams, rice puddings, yoghurts and galaktomboureko, but which is, to this day, one of the few places on the island from which one can buy authentic Corfu fresh butter.

FYI: During the summer at least, the creamery is open until at least 02.00 am.
