  • 1kg beef
  • 100g butter
  • 4 onions
  • 500g mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups cream
  • a few drops of lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 tbsp mustard powder

    1. In a large pan, melt the butter and sautee the chopped onions. Add the beef and mushrooms and continue sauteeing for a further 6-7 minutes, stirring constantly. Sprinkle with flour and add the lemon juice and cream. Simmer until the sauce is done.

    2. In a bowl, mix the mustard, sugar, and salt, and add 1-2 tbsp boiling water. Mix into a paste, and leave to stand for 15 minutes. Add the paste to the pot, and simmer, mixing lightly. Serve with rice, pasta or chips.

Originally a delicious Russian recipe, combining beef with mushrooms and a slightly tart cream. Its history can be traced to the beginning of the 19th century. It has travelled all over the world, and is particularly popular in Greece. Many variations of the recipe can now be found all over Europe and America - sometimes with tomato added to the sauce.
